Surry Hills – From Classic to Contemporary

Surry Hills – a clever use of materials and textures bridge the gap between old and new

The owner of this property was fortunate enough to have an original sandstone wall against one of their boundaries, complete with rusted iron window bars allowing us to create something pretty special. Filetti cobble stones were used to compliment the rustic look of the sandstone, with polished concrete providing a modern contrast. Spotted gum hardwood adds warmth and colour to the hard features, with dark Porters Paint on the rear wall really allowing the timber to ‘pop’.

Planting was selected for colour and textural contrast in the foliage, with mostly lower growing plants to maximize the feeling of space all except for a Japanese maple feature tree as a focal point.

Outdoor lighting was a key consideration, to offer maximum use of the space and bring the outside in. Up-lighting illuminates the beautiful hand carved texture of the wall bringing its attention to the foreground.
